Overview & Highlights

Mesón Puente Romano in Asturias offers a captivating coffee shop experience unlike any other in Cangas de Onís. Nestled at 9 Calle, right beneath the historic 13th-century Roman bridge and alongside the tranquil Sella river, this charming spot invites visitors to immerse themselves in a blend of history, nature, and casual indulgence.

From the moment you settle into one of the outdoor tables, the ambiance instantly transports you to a serene setting where the gentle murmur of the river complements the timeless beauty of the bridge overhead. Ignacio Vazquez perfectly captures this feeling, sharing how “We got two coffees with some cookies. We sat outside and it was a perfect environment.” There’s something truly special about sipping a rich, aromatic coffee here — the combination of exceptional quality beans and the fresh Asturian air elevates every sip into a moment of pure pleasure.

While Mesón Puente Romano is celebrated for its coffee, guests often extend their visit to savor hearty local dishes and delightful desserts. Stefan emphasizes the overall quality when saying, “Perfect place to have lunch/dinner. Next to the old Roman bridge. Food and service excellent. Also for a very good price.” This speaks volumes about the consistency and value the venue brings without compromising quality.

The menu offers a delicious array of traditional and contemporary options, designed to satisfy different cravings and appetites. Ryan Roberts fondly recounts his favorites, highlighting the entrecot and the cheese platter as standouts that truly showcase local flavors and a refined culinary touch. And if you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss the “tarta de la abuela” — a homemade grandmother’s cake offering a nostalgic sweetness that will linger fondly in your heart, alongside a creamy cheesecake that perfectly balances richness and freshness.

Atmosphere is paramount here, especially during the warmer months when dining outside under the bridge’s shade feels like stepping into a postcard. Marta Jara captures this essence: “Good service, great atmosphere, delicious food, good prices. Right underneath the Roman bridge perfect for a summer day.” Every detail, from the attentive service to the relaxed vibe, makes Mesón Puente Romano a place to unwind and truly savor the moment.

It’s important to note, as Barney Jackson does, that there is a €10 minimum spend on cards and that they don’t serve cider by the glass, which is a minor consideration in an otherwise outstanding experience. This adds a touch of exclusivity and encourages guests to fully enjoy the offerings, whether they choose coffee, a full meal, or refreshing drinks.

Mesón Puente Romano is more than just a coffee shop; it’s a beloved local gem where history, gastronomy, and atmosphere converge perfectly. Whether you’re seeking a quiet coffee break with a view that takes your breath away or a memorable meal steeped in regional charm, this spot delivers with warmth, authenticity, and a beautiful connection to the past.

For anyone visiting Asturias, especially Cangas de Onís, Mesón Puente Romano provides a timeless experience that sparks a deep appreciation for the region’s culture and culinary heritage — a true must-visit where every cup of coffee and every plate served feels like a celebration of the senses and the soul.

Good service, great atmosphere, delicious food, good prices. Right underneath the Roman bridge perfect for a summer day.

This is always a favorite when we visit the area. Situated next to the Sella river in the shadow of the 13th century Roman bridge, this place is a culinary staple of Cangas de Onís. The setting is so beautiful and serene. The food is always delicious; personally I enjoy the entrecot and cheese platter. Also, the desserts are wonderful. The grandma cake (tarta de la abuela) and cheesecake are a few favorites. Like always, the staff is exceptionally kind and friendly. Overall, this is a great place with good food and friendly staff. You can’t beat the hospitality of this area. Enjoy.

Amazing location with an outdoor area right under the Roman bridge, standard food and drink options. €10 card minimum though, and they don't serve cider by the glass
